One month to go!
LexiCon is just one month away! We’re confirming the final details of what we hope will be a fantastic weekend for everyone, and are looking forward to seeing you all next month.
In this update: Sir Julius Vogel awards, volunteers needed, competitions, and more...
Sir Julius Vogel Awards
The Sir Julius Vogel Awards shortlist was announced earlier this month. Congratulations to all nominees - it’s great to once again see so much high quality science fiction and fantasy being created in New Zealand!
As LexiCon members, you are all eligible to vote, and voting forms will be available at the convention. If you’d like to take a look at the nominated works in advance, many of them are available in a voters’ packet - find details of how to access it here. There will also be a display table at LexiCon with many of the shortlisted works for you to take a look at, and we expect to be showing all the nominated films - more details to come.
Registration desk volunteers needed!
We’re looking for volunteers to sit at the registration desk for an hour at some point over the weekend to help check in con attendees. We intend to have a simple online system and con packs all ready to go. We’d love to have lots of volunteers so no one has to be there for too long and so that most shifts have two people.
If you think you’d be willing to take on a shift, and have not already been in touch, please let us know by emailing membership@lexicon.cons.nz with the following information:
- Preferred day(s) and time(s). Options are: Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning.
- Person(s) with whom you’d like to share a shift (optional).
The Registration desk is a great place to meet people, so we hope you consider volunteering for a shift.
Limited Entry Events
While you can decide most of your schedule as you go, a few of our events require sign ups in advance.
The following all have limited places, get in quick to ensure you don’t miss out:
- Word of the Things, a satirical radio play by Paul Mannering, which takes a shot at everything from classic fantasy tropes to the current political upheaval in the US and its impacts on the rest of the world. There are a range of parts to play, and no experience is required; just don’t be afraid to speak up in public and have fun.
- Publicity for Authors, a highly recommended workshop with experienced publicity wrangler Elizabeth Heritage for both indie and traditionally published authors. Elizabeth will take you through everything from writing a press release to giving you specialised information on who’s who in book media in Aotearoa.
- The Floating Market is an opportunity for you to buy and sell all kind of SFF merchandise, new or used. There are limited tables available, so get in quick!
- The Super Sculpey polymer clay workshop is a great opportunity for the crafty among you to get into some modelling, and learn to make your own custom board game pieces.
To sign up, click on the event on the programme, and you’ll be taken to a sign up page.
Check your room booking…
In a little over a week, the hotel will be releasing rooms for all unbooked nights. We’ll still be accepting cancellations up until 5 days before the convention, but changes (such as extensions to your stay) may not be possible. So please check your membership page now to ensure your booking is correct.
...and your badge name!
We’ll soon be printing badges - this is your last chance to check that the name for your badge is exactly how you want it. Badge names are usually your first and last names (eg Taylor Jones) but feel free to use a nickname, online handle, or whatever you want people to recognise you by at the con. You can check - and if necessary change - your badge name here.
Pathfinder Society
One of our members is interested in running a Pathfinder Society game at LexiCon. If you’re a Pathfinder Society member, or want to know more, email Keith at phaeton@slingshot.co.nz (include your PFS number and region if applicable).
Competitions
A reminder that our art, filking, and masquerade competitions are still open for entries. Check out the full details on our competitions page.
Thank you all for your support so far. As always, please do feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
