Two months to go!
We have just two months to go until the convention! We don’t quite know where the time has gone, but we’re putting together final touches on the programme and working hard (in a completely calm and not at all panicked manner) on sorting out all the other details that go together to make a convention happen, and we’re really excited to see you all soon.
Read on for more updates on our programme, social media, competitions, conpacks, and more…
Programme
Have you have a look at our programme lately? We’re adding new events all the time (and have several more in the works), so it’s worth stopping by. And if you’re a panelist or other participant, make sure you’re logged in when you look at the page so the events you’re involved in will be highlighted.
A few of our events are limited entry, so sign up now if you want to be sure of a place. These include:
- Word of the Things, a satirical radio play by Paul Mannering, which takes a shot at everything from classic fantasy tropes to the current political upheaval in the US and its impacts on the rest of the world. There are a range of parts to play, and no experience is required; just don’t be afraid to speak up in public and have fun.
- Publicity for Authors, a highly recommended workshop with experienced publicity wrangler Elizabeth Heritage for both indie and traditionally published authors. Elizabeth will take you through everything writing a press release to giving you specialised information on who’s who in book media in Aotearoa.
- The Floating Market is an opportunity for you to buy and sell all kind of SFF merchandise, new or used. There are limited tables available, so get in quick!
- The Super Sculpey polymer clay workshop is a great opportunity for the crafty among you to get into some modelling, and learn to make your own custom board game pieces.
Masquerade and Filking Competitions now open!
Our writing competitions are now closed, and judging is in progress, but we’ve opened two new competitions - filking for the lyricists among you (give it a go even if filking is new to you!) and the Masquerade for the cosplayers. Our art competition is also still open to entries. Check out details of all our competitions here.
Find us on Twitter… and Facebook...
As many of you will know, we’re on Twitter as @Lexicon_NZ. We’ll be tweeting throughout the convention, and will have some giveaways and spot prizes both there and on Facebook, so it’s worth following us if you haven’t already.
Our official hashtag for the convention is #lexiconnz - use it when you tweet to connect with other fans.
And on Facebook we’re posting some interview snippets with our Guests of Honour… check out the first here.
Accommodation
We have now completely booked out the Suncourt. There’s plenty of other accommodation nearby, but as it is a holiday weekend we still recommend you make arrangements sooner rather than later. We have a list of alternative recommendations which you may find useful.
And if your plans change and you need to cancel a booked room at the Suncourt, please update your membership so another fan can have the room.
And on that note...
We hope we will be seeing you all in Taupō, but we know plans can change. If you can no longer make it, you have the option of switching to a supporting membership. Supporting memberships cost just $20 (with concession and solidarity rates also available), and include voting rights for the Sir Julius Vogel awards and proxy voting right for NatCon bidding, a copy of the conbook, and the ability to enter LexiCon competitions.
If you would prefer to cancel your membership entirely with a full refund, you have that option by contacting us directly until 2 May 2017. After that date we will have made financial commitments based on membership numbers, so that option will no longer be available, but you will still be able to switch to a supporting membership.
Going, going...
We’ll be holding an auction to raise funds for Rainbow Youth! If you have something to sell, check out the details here and get in touch - items can be sold on your behalf for a commission, or donated. Donations of items to use for giveaways and prizes are also gratefully received.
Con Packs
Are you an author, artist, or other creative? Want to promote your work to our members? We’re offering members the opportunity to send us bookmarks or similar promotional material for our conpacks. Contact us for more information and details of where to send these - we will need them to reach us by the first week of May.
Tell your friends!
As we get closer to the convention, we’d really appreciate you reminding your friends to sign up. In particular, if you know people in the Taupō region who perhaps haven’t been to a convention before but you think might enjoy it, perhaps send a link to our website their way, and remind them that day rates are available. The more fans, the better the convention for everyone.
Thank you for your support so far. As always, please do feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
